Things to do at Sequim Bay State Park

Sequim Bay State Park is a year-round, 92-acre marine camping park, located just three miles south of Sequim. It hosts a stretch of the Olympic Discovery Trail, which is a popular 120-mile (and growing) recreation trail beloved by bikers from all over. The Olympic Discovery Trail actually starts in the nearby Victorian port city of Port Townsend and traverses some of the most breathtaking scenery all the way out to the coastal beaches of the Pacific Ocean.

Since Sequim Bay State Park (and the town itself) are located in the rain shadow of the Olympic Mountains, the park only receives 17 inches of rainfall annually. That makes it an unusually pleasant place to camp and enjoy some adventures! The park offers 2.5 miles of hiking trail, complete with high bridges for hikers to see salmon passing in the stream below and birds sitting in the trees. Although hiking is the main draw, the park offers a variety of other activities to suit any type of outdoor enthusiast.

The park is a hit with the boating community as well, thanks to the boat launch that leads into the calm waters of Sequim Bay. Launching from the park requires a permit, though a one-day pass is available for purchase. While on the water, boaters can enjoy swimming, water sports, and seasonal fishing/crabbing as allowed. A recreational license is required for fishing and shellfish harvesting at Washington State Parks. Sequim Bay is protected by two overlapping sandbars, which also makes it a great place for canoeing and kayaking.

The park offers 45 standard campsites and 15 full-utility sites for those looking to extend their time in the great outdoors. Most sites accommodate RVS and boats and some are very near the water, making it a boater’s paradise. There are two reservable picnic shelters and one has power and lights. The park offers an additional nine picnic areas with barbecue braziers.  Three restrooms complete with showers are scattered throughout the park. While camping, families, and friends can enjoy horseshoe pits, baseball fields, soccer nets and a tennis court. The park also offers 4,909 feet of saltwater coastline on Sequim Bay, which is great for beach walks.

Pets are allowed in the park as long as they are on a leash at all times. Pet owners must clean up after their pets, though doggy bags are located throughout the park. Reservations are in effect from May 15 to September 15, and visits are limited to 10 days at a time during the summer months, so be sure to plan before you go.
