North Olympic Discovery Marathon
Sequim is the perfect town to live in if you like to be outside throughout the year. The weather is mild enough, and even dry enough, to get outside and enjoy the spoils of mother nature in Spring, Summer, Fall, and even Winter. That said, the summer months in Washington State as a whole, and Sequim in particular, are especially magical. The weather is perfect; not too hot, dry, sunny, and nothing short of spectacular. We’re excited to welcome another summer on the Olympic Peninsula into our midst. To kick it all off is one of Sequim’s premiere sporting events; the North Olympic Discovery Marathon.
Run the Marathon, Discover the Peninsula
We know there are a lot of people in the Pacific Northwest who enjoy running a variety of races, from 5Ks and half marathons right on up to running the full 26.2 mile marathon. It’s a grueling testament to our dedication and perseverance; qualities important to Pacific Northwesterners. The North Olympic Discovery Marathon, which is part of the Salish Sea Road Race Series, takes place on June 4, 2017, and is nothing short of a feat. The race begins in sunny Sequim and ends in neighboring Port Angeles. The journey is rough, but along the way you’re guaranteed to see some of the Olympic Peninsula’s most stunning natural attractions.
Much of the journey incorporates the multi-use trail, the Olympic Discovery Trail, which offers runners incredible vistas of the rugged Olympic Mountains. In the last, and possibly hardest 5 miles of the race, runners will come up alongside the sparkling blue waters of the Strait of Juan de Fuca; an excellent visual distraction for those moments when you think you can’t possible take another step. It’s not uncommon to see (or maybe just hear) seals barking and eagles soaring overhead as you make your way down the trail, either. Marathon participants will cross some unique and iconic trestle bridges, remnants of the once-burgeoning railroad industry. It’s no wonder that the North Olympic Discovery Marathon has been called one of the most beautiful marathon venues anywhere.
If you don’t want to participate in the full 26.2 mile race but still want to enjoy the journey, don’t fret. There’s also a marathon walk, a half marathon, a 5K/10K, a marathon relay, and even a kids marathon. Each event finishes at the beautiful Port Angeles City Pier, and will be followed by Live Music, Beer Garden, food, awards, massage, shirt exchange, photo opportunities, beach-combing, and so much more.
